i need to know about all of the following things

cost
use of energy
reliability
general power (gph)
how well they filter the water
ease of cleaning/ frequency of cleaning

Most of that you need to research on your own, by looking at the actual products. You are asking way too much. Narrow down your questions, by indicating the actual models you are looking at. The Eheim line has over 20 models alone.

Do a search on this forum; there was a discussion about which 1 was better between eheim and fluval; I think at the end it is eheim that came out on top. I have a fluval and so far no problems. If you have the money for a eheim up front go for the eheim; said to be better and more economical in the long run...

Eheim is best in all areas.

I disagree. at least in some models.

for example, I much prefer the Rena XP3 to the eheim 2215 that I had for a variety of reasons..:)

self priming (just plug it in)
holds more media
more powerful
just as quiet
has more than one outlet option included (not sold seperate)

and on top of all that, was a bit cheaper..

But I only have experience with this one particular eheim.

they make many filters, some of which are very expensive..

No experience with eheims, but between a rena xp2 and fluval 304, the rena works better for me. In fact, the fluval now sits dry as a backup if needed, and I run 2 renas on my 125 with 2 AC110's.
The only thing the fluval gets marks from me (which ain't enough to consider) above the rena, is the noise level. Fluval is quieter, but more power equals more noise to some extent IMO.
