Hi guys,

I just bought a 10" Ornate from a friend.

His ultimate home will be the 200G "Monster" Tank.

However, I am a bit concerned with compatibility...

The 10" Ornate comes with a reputation of being very aggressive. He has killed several tank-mates including TSNs, Plecos, and even (allegedly) a Silver Arowana.

The 18" Endli has been with me since he was about 7". He has very recently killed two Green Terrors (one was 8" the other about 7").

Given the uber-aggressive nature of these two species, will they "even" out each other aggression and hence be compatible in a same 200G tank?

Please advise,

I would think they would be fine as my big endli and ornate just stay away from each other, when they get close my ornate like to lay on top of the endli and hump him problems is they are both male kinda funny.if they do become aggressive break the line of sight with drift wood and or plants

I think it's a bad idea to keep those 2 bichirs. The ornate has killed some big fish. Anything that kills a TSN and silver aro is not safe to keep with other fish. If he did that to large fish like that, imagine what he would do to you smaller fish and bichirs. Plus you've got an aggressive endli too. They will just fight all the time. Since the endli is bigger, they'll fight until the endli kills the ornate.

I think these two species are supposed to be compatible as you have observed in your tank. I just need to check if the specific fish I have fall in this "usual" category.

Yes.. In case of the endli, I think I might have been underfeeding him back when he attacked the GTs.

Given the ornate's history, I will keep him "under observation" in a different tank to get a better idea of his behaviour.

Thanks

Compatibility is tough to really give good advice on.

If the endli goes hungry, he could kill the ornate. But even if kept well fed, it may display territorial behavior and tear up the ornates fins.

When I've had two bichirs fight over territory, I just let them be and monitor them to make sure the aggression does not go too far.

Most times they settle things on their own.

I think having just the two of them is asking for trouble. With most semi-aggressive fish, if kept in a group of two the dominant one will often pick on the submissive one non stop. If you were asking about adding the ornate to a group of say 4+ I'd say give it a try, but just having the two of them is destined to fail IMO...

I guess, I will need to keep these two bichir separate for some time.

In all I have Bichirs in 4 tanks:

1. One 18" Endli (in ~200G)
2. One 10" Ornate (in ~30G) : "Under observation"
3. One 8" Delhezi (in ~55G)
4. Four 5" Endlis and One 4" Ornate (in ~30G)

I think the growth rates for the larger bichir are going to slow down soon allowing the smaller ones to catch-up.

In a few months, I hope to have all of them (except the 18" Endli) in the 55G. Eventually, (hopefully), they all can live in the 200G without issues.

Thanks,

You may get some torn fins. But I think it should be fine.
