I have one green terror in a 55gallon tank. Could I put a smallish dat in there with him, maybe with some other dither fish? Or will the dat be too aggressive?

So maybe some dither fish in there might help? I think I'm going to use a TON of fake plants. Maybe the lowered visibility would help then? Ideas?
i wouldn't chance it dats are not especially aggressive and a GT would make mincemeat of it in a 100 gal let alone in a 55,i couldn't keep oscars and a dat together and the dat was there first!
could go either way. GT's are generally docile as far as cichlids go. i wouldn't worry about the dat picking on the GT. a 55 won't work for life for a single dat.

Would the DAT be okay in there for a year at least? I'm going to try and "test" the GT's agression by putting one or two of my other cichlids in there for a short while.
The DATs at my LFS are maybe 3 1/2" to 4", at most. Might one be okay in a 38 gallon for a year or so if the 55 doesn't work out? (dimensions 36" x 12" x 21") I have good filtration. Thanks !

I think I remember reading somewhere that Dats grow only 1-2 inches a year. Is there any truth to this, from people who have kept them?

depends how big they are when you get them. If you get a 2" dat it will grow more then 1-2" in a year. If the dat is already over a foot when you get it, then 1-2" sounds about right.
They grow very slow but its hard to give you an exact scale because every fish will grow at its own pace. And everything depends on feedings, water quality, water changes, and so on.
