So my lfs has an African butterfly fish that's really neat and was curious if it could go with my acaras? Seeing as it primarily hangs out at the surface I think they would stay out of each others way. Not sure though, any thoughts?

I would say it would depend on the Acara's the African butterfly fish will occasionally go to the bottom when spooked. African butterfly fish are only a threat to small fish the venture into it's surface area.
What size tank?
ABF usually stays at the top and are pretty well camouflage so shouldn't be a problem if tank is large and tall enough.
