I live in a small town in alaska, as a fish enthusiast i am very limited as far as resources go. That being said, i have a 55 gallon tank that my daughter left about two years ago with a female convict, a 12 inch albino pleco and two red eyed tetras . Last week i added 2 two inch Peacock cichlids (apparently). The convict took to the new peacocks like they were puppies. Even the tetras school with them. Make no mistake, my convict will kill anyone she will not accept. My concern is that i dont know what species they really are and when i will be able to sex them. I think they are both males because of the vivid yellow coloration. I would like to have more but too many males would be bad. Does anyone have a suggestion? They have brought life and youth to my old fish, its great!

Picture would be helpful for the ID :P but quite easy ID for those peacock cichlid. If they have long fin and bright color (depend on species) they are most likely male. Males peacock tent to fight each other but not really into killing each other, it would make your tank a lot more active. The only issue is your Convict, it might kill other fish :P

Another option is remove the convict and buy more male peacock cichlid, you will need to decor your tank with more rocks and caves and watch them dashing in and out chasing each other in a fun way (don't buy female though).

I actually would love to, but i felt she was lonesome. they were for her but ididnt want her to breed.. she is quite beautiful but for the last year she has stayed in her cave except in the evening when the pleco coms active then she polices the tank. THANK YOU for your eply . I have no way to send pics . What charactoristics differentiate tthem from other cichlids
