i currently have a 150 gal jaguar cichlid tank. with them is a common pleco, and a spotted rafael. (came with the drift wood i got from friend)??? i was wondering if a fire eel would survive with a jaguar species tank. i have 6-- 1" jags in the tank now. let me know what you think. and if not a fire eel what kind of bottom dweller would bring life to the grounds?

the fire eel would make a pricey feeder bro..
try plecos.. they have a armored body so any bites dont do much..
p.s jaguars have a way of bothering eels IME

How big will the fire eel be? If it's bigger than the jags, which I would assume, I see it going the other way... Either that or the jags would be too interested in dominant male, pairing kinda stuff..

well at one inch the jags would probably be the ones in trouble. but give them some time to grow out. but i still wouldn't try the fire eel. you should definetely look into bichirs though.

sorry if you already know this but you WILL NOT be able to keep 6 fully gron jags in the same tank for long. one will be fine. if your lucky you could end up with a mated pair, but they'll probably kill everything else in the tank so you wouldn't have to worry about getting a bottome feeder anyways!

if it was me i would just keep one in the end and i would definitely consider adding a bichir of some sort. do some research to figure out which kind you would want. I've kept bichir's with cichlids before and the cichlids completely ignored them

thanks for the ideas! i figured on keeping 3 of the 6 jags. i am trying to get 1 male and 2 female. i thought 150 gallons would be enough room for 3 to grow in? i have a seperator in case i get a mated pair, then i can keep them seperate untill fry are big enough to move to give away. then i would remove the seperator after that. is 150 gallons not going to be big enough for 3 jags?

DO NOT I repeat do not get any cylindrical shape fish with manguense(jaguars) as they will be eaten. manguense are piscivours by nature so those round fish make tasty snacks. The rapheal may actually be in trouble when the jags grow. plecos or other cats that grow big ie. s.a. bumblebees or some pictus cats. Yes the bichirs & eels will be safe until the jags get about 4 -5 " so if you want to try those until the jags grow great. I've had 8-9" oscars, & jags eat cylindrical shape fish the same length or slightly longer then them including snakeheads & shovelnose cats. The body shape is what the fish look at. Non piscivours ie. theraps amphilophis species might be cool with bichirs but not those that specificaly look for vulnerable prey weakness.

ok well maybe i will stick with plecos for the bottom feeders. i just think they are kind of lazy. i did have pictus cats with my S.A. cichlid tank, and they were very active. but from what i have read the jags would destroy them when they get bigger.

what about keeping 3 full grown jags in a 150 gallon tank do you think that will be enough room for them? i have 6 in there now but figured i would lose at least 3 over time with them weeding eachother out. the tank is filled with shale cliffs and hollowed drift wood to help with territory issues.

i doubt you will be able to keep 3 maybe 2 but usually SA cichlids are monogamous so once the male picks his female they will both gang up on the other female and kill her, this tank would be ok for a pair though you will have to watch them and make sure the male isnt being to overly aggressive with the female and if she is in danger put a divider in with female sized holes in it so they can still breed but she can get away and be safe

2 is fine. i'm good with that especially if i get them to pair up. now i need to decide on the best bottom feeder. the raphael is doomed i read up max size 5 inch. only thing he has is good hiding places and being nocturnal. but i cant get him out now and he came with the drift wood. im going to do some research on cat fish tonight see what i can find that may work. thank you everyone for the info!!!!!!
