Hey

I'm about to start a small composting project for my home and I was wondering whether the red wriggler worms could be fed to my fishies. The only reason im worried is because of the possible undigested scraps of foods in the worm. I'm assuming it's fine but felt like asking anyways.

Well I haven't gotten around to actually start yet. Primarily it's for the environmental benefits of not producing so much waste that can be converted into fertilizer and whatnot. So I'm assuming I'll be composting unused veggies/some newspaper/that type of stuff.

I was just wondering if I could use them also as nutritional fish food.

You definitely can use red wrigglers as a nutritious food as i also used them before when i was young, and i usually either dig out for them in the backyard, or underneath my own compost pile. But, i haven't done it for a while since i get frozen blood worms. Less messy. Also, with worms, you need to watch out for the fat content as worms will fatten up a fish pretty fast if you feed on a regular basis.

Worms Rock, my Ray loves them, Geos love them, and my Dats...

Geos will eat it like a noodle for an hour...
Dats suck them right down...
Ray eats a crawler in one bite...

Alright, thanks for the great advice. I'll get right onto the project as soon as possible. :D My little polys are going to get nice n fat like pigs.

I dunno if I would feed them too much newspaper myself, as I would wonder if the ink is safe for ingestion or if buildup could have any kind of long term effects?

Ha! I knew it!! a poly keeper! :D please do share your results as i would want to try it myself...for my polys. Right now, i still buy my worms. got a cheap supplier so it's still pretty convenient. I'd like to experiment on that worm project though.

..and yes, worms fatten up fish pretty quick. is that a bad thing? coz mine are fat...

Heh alrights, I'll post some updates when I start feeding em and hope my fish don't go belly up. (Or at least I'll try it out on some of my less important fish)

I'll also take some pics along the way, for other people who are interested in making a DIY compost worm thingy. Worse comes to worse, my fish hate them and I have a composter that makes good fertilizer. Can't go wrong with makeing less waste. :grinno:
