So I'm thinking my hard drive is about to take a **** on me, but I'm not positive. The computer is probably 5-6 years old so I wouldn't doubt it. I shut my computer off every night and the last two mornings I've tried to start it I get a black screen that says something to the effect of "reboot system and select proper boot device or insert media into proper disk device". If I go into setup it shows my hard drive as not being detected. I've played with it and powered off my computer a few times and eventually I've been able to get it running. I've also had lately a couple times where my computer will just freeze mouse wont move, no keyboard buttons work and I gotta restart.

I know for positive it's not a virus. I keep my computer firewalled and virus scanned.

Any thoughts?

Open the case and check that the power cable and the ribbon cable are seated firmly on both the HD end and the mother board End.

If this doesn't resolve it then it might be time for a new one. Better to get it now so you can still read the old one and copy any important data to the new one afterwards.
