Hope this is okay to post here.

I have a computer question that I hope someone can help me out with.

I have a pc with windows vista. There are three other computers currently running wirelessly on my network, a mac and 2 laptops. I want to add another laptop but my douchebag ex-brother-in-law is the one who made the network password and we don't know what it is.

So when you try to connect the new laptop to the net, it asks for a password. Where on my pc would I be able to find and change this password? He is the one who set this whole thing up and I don't even know where to look.

Am confused...is it a PC or a laptop your trying to connect? Via wireless or RJ45 network cable?

Sounds like your ex brother in law setup the passwords on the wireless router, so, thats where you need too change the passwords..

Access too a router is usually done via internet explorer ( or your usualy browser ) and for the internet address try typing in 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1 .....they are both common IP address for routers if they have not had their settings changed..

Alternativly, go too a PC that is already connected....click start, click run and type in CMD

This will give you the command prompt..

Here, type in ipconfig /all

This will then show you on screen the network settings for that computer..

Look for DHCP and DNS...they will more than likely be the same..as per the pic below..

This setting, as in mine of 192.168.1.254 is your router address...

When you type this into your browser, it should take you too the router home page where you can change any passwords you require.

If, when you type in the ip address above, and it prompts you for a username and password, and you dont know these, then your only other option is too do a hard reset on the router which will set them back to factory defaults...usually username admin, password admin....or username admin with no password....then you'll have to resetup the router from scratch, but with your own passwords..

Hope this helps..

Thank you for your help, but it turned out to be something stupidly simple. I had to add the MAC address to the list of computers that the router accepts. Duh! Thanks though!

did you try using password as the password
