To hook up a new monitor to my laptop to have 2 screens for some stock market stuff and whatever else, I just need the new monitor, and then do I need a special cable to show 2 different screens?

No, your standard monitor cable will work. Plug it into the video port on your laptop, then go to display settings to select two monitors.

It's amazing working with two monitors :) But, screen captures are a pain lol

Good luck!

You will need either a VGA cable or a DVI. Most likely VGA. Some laptops will not show two separate screens, just the same screen twice. My old laptop was like that.

the option is in your video card settings. depending on how old/new your laptop is you need a VGA, DVI, or an HDMI cable. to connect the output on the laptop to the input on your monitor. Go to monoprice.com their 3 dollar cables are just as good if not better than any 60 dollar monster crap....

beat by a minute..lol VGA is so dinosaur... all the new laptops/monitors have hdmi if its a couple years old DVI... they make cheap converters that are sold on monoprice as well... incase ur laptop is new(dvi or hdmi) and your monitor is old VGA... or vice versa...

well Ill be buying a newer monitor, I would like the bigger screen anyways, at least for home, but thought it would be great for stock charts and stuff. Laptop is around 5 years old. Good shape, though I will get another one pry later this year. So old HP pavilion laptop, new monitor, now what?

you may get choppy graphic if you are using a laptop older than a yr or 2 when using 2 monitors....

It would probably depend on what ports your laptop has, just look for a monitor that has the same.

For stock trading soon two will not be enough lol. I've bee using two for a while now and its getting tight between brokerage software, twitter, chatrooms, charts, and scanners. I want to do four stacked.
