I have a usb port on the front of my pc, whenever I saved to a flashdrive in said port the location was "g". A week or so back the port stopped working so I used a cord plugged into a rear usb port which my wife usually has her flash drive in and hers is always location "f'. When I use the rear port my usb shows up as "g" not "f" is this right?

what happens is it installs the drivers per usb port, you can see this with any usb device plug it in one port, then move it and plug it in another port. There will be a sligh delay while re installing drivers. So the computer keeps it in G from the first time you used it, and gives it a new drive for the other port.

in the end it doesn't really matter what drive letter it gives you.

I see. It still works but since the PC is 7 years old it made a little nervous.

It's not really reinstalling drivers, it just assigns whatever was plugged in to the next available drive letter. The drivers stay saved to your computer, it would be a PITA for it to have to install a driver over and over again for something that gets plugged in multiple times a day/week/month. For instance, if your computer is setup properly, you should be able to unplug both yours and your wifes flashdrives, plug yours in first and while leaving yours plugged in, plug hers into a different port and yours should show up as "f" and hers should show up as "g", now if you flipped this and she plugged hers in first and yours second hers would be "f" and yours would be "g"

I have to challenge you on this. Take a usb device that you have that actually needs drivers. move the jack its plugged into, it will reinstall the drives, now the drivers are already installed so it wont make you do anything. When working at a local college this teach had us in stall a tv tuner since they didn't have admin. Well he would freaking plug it into another port and we would have to walk back down there and login and install it again for him. We told him at least twice to always us the same port.

What I am saying is windows itself reinstalls the driver from the driver cache. you only have to install the driver once, and in 99% time all flash drives use the same generic driver anyway.

I don't mean to sound like a DB.

Computers are like fish keeping sometimes we in the know can sound like jerks when defending incorrect information. Also alot of people think they know because they "work" on computers just like a lot of people "keep" fish and in both base give only half correct information.

I have given plenty of half correct information in my life, but the fact that usb devices reinstall drivers per port is not one of them. Although these days you couldn't pay me to work on a windows machine, that crazy mouse is way to slow.
