I can't believe I'm asking a question about spawning convicts, I feel like such a newb, but here it goes.

My 1 year old con (about 2.5" SL) just spawned for the first time, as it is the first time she has had access to a mate. The male is only one inch long. Anyway, she is in a 55 with some senegal bichirs, a 3" raphael cat, a common pleco that won't grow past 2.5" despite daily cucumber slices and algae discs, a 2.5" texas and my 6" GT. Nitrates hit about 30 after a week, and I do 75-90% water changes weekly.

Now my question is, should I do a lower % water change? Can fry handle that large of a change?

Also, she spawned in the dead center of my tank, do you think if I move the cave to one side, she will spawn there next side so she doesn't control my entire tank? There are about 4 caves, and she choose the one in the middle.

Thanks.
PS, overstocked blah blah blah, I keep my nitrates down, the fish are spawning, and there are no ragged fins. It has an Ehiem 2218, an EMP 280, and a Whisper 30 on it. When the texas gets big I will re home him, same with 2 of the senegals.

As long as you make sure the water props. are close to the water you take out you should not experiance any problem changing water with fry in it. Chances are that they will likely be eaten by the other fish though.
You can move the cave, and they may or may not spawn in it. Eventually though they will likely try to control the entire tank no matter where you put the cave, especially once the fry are free swimming.

Thanks. I went ahead with my 90% water change, wish me luck!

Thank is currently filling up as we speak, but very slowly to make any change easier.

even if the fry do die, i wouldn't get so bummed out, if they're like any other cons, they'll have another batch in a couple weeks.

Oh well, my thermometer has informed me that my water change dropped the tank temp by about 8 degrees. My other fish are fine, I guess my hand is a poor judge of temperature lol.

I've been thinking though, that if only a few fry survive the temp shift, I'll be breeding superior cons :)

They are still in the cave, where the mom put them when I started the water change. So I guess I'll see soon whether they survive or not.

i had about 20 fry survive a cahnge of about 20 degrees on 3 or 4 days due to loss of power, unfortunatly the new batch of wigglers was lost, but by the looks of things i should have more in a week or so

thats awsome, i would however suggest smaller more frequent water changes, even tho i don't i just keep my regular wekkly 50's and it all seems good to me
