Got my 55 gallon started...going for african river look/set up..with african black knife as my center piece fish...with rope fish, birch, and elephant nose fish to represent that african river Com...the tank has small river pebbles as bottom with lots of mopani wood as shelters/retreats...will also have some asian and aussie fish like some gourami's and ranibows...was thinking of a dehlzi or ornate bichir..the plastice plants in my tank (the soft silk cloth type) and all buried in the pebble rock...with larger pebbles/stacker rocks around their bases...will this keep the bichir from uprooting them?...i heard they do this...but then again..when i see pics of your bichirs ...they are sometimes in tanks with real pants!!!..how?

also..do the ornate or dehlzi get too big for my 55 ...is one smaller than the other?...if so which one?...if both will grow to big..then which one would i have to settle for...i hate senegal or palamas:cry:

It depends on the bichir's personality. some uproot and some don't. I have yet to have one of mine uproot my fake plant.
Also, the ornate is a slow grower but definitely can't be house in a 55 for life. for an ornate you're looking at closer to 125 gallons or more for life.
And why do you hate Senegals?! they're one of the most active species of Polypterus!!! Get one and you'll never regret it!

Not hate...that is a strong word...i just like the color schemes of the del and ornate more..but i figured they might get too big....i am gonna go with a senegal.

Thanx for the info...it is very helpful..this LFS that i go too are just sometimes dead wrong..they have even suggested that i can get a fire eel....no way..not for a 55..and they would probably suggest the del..only because they have so many of them...i will most def go with the senegal though.

This has nothing to do with plants... but um... either of those species WILL eat your gouramis. And they will enjoy doing it.

If you know where you want the fake plants to go put a dab of silicone on the base
but just a dab it will hold them in place but youcan remove them if you need to.Also
if you like delhezis 1 would be fine in your 55 -Anne

beblonde...i already have the water in the tank and the filter and everything running..i wish i would have thought of that before i put the water in:(

I can't do it now...that would poision the water..doesn't that stuff take 24 hours to dry?..and it would not work underwater...that is a great idea though..for my future tank set ups. Thanx bb

Just asking... Aren't 125s 18 inches wide? An ornate would be barely able to turn around in there when grown, no? Or am I just talking gibberish...?

My senecal hasnt lifted any of our plants. A delhize and Ornate both great preety big ,with all of the other fish i dont think there would really be enoguh room.
