One last concern before getting a new tank, is the possibility of a tank cracking/leaking/exploding. Is there any way to prevent this? Is there any brand that are less likely to crack? Safety precautions? 180 Gallons of water is serious business if a tank cracks, my hardwood floor is done, its going to leak to my basement too and the carpet needs some serious work.

This is a very scary thought and I have nightmares about my 55G.

Only prevention is not getting a tank. We all take a chance whether it be glass or acrylic. I have 4 tanks and have a 180g or more coming this year. I will not let the nightmare of breakage stop me so it's all up to you. I'd say it's worth it and the risk is low but if you do go glass I would recommend Aqueon glass tanks, once and still known as All Glass Aquarium.

Thank you for the replies

- Glasscages is impossible, I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

are acrylic tanks more likely to stay in place? It really is a nightmare if it broke.

Visually, tanks built by Aqueon are better built than those made by Marineland (Perfecto) at least at the large sizes.

I compared my Aqueon 150 to the same size tank from Marineland and my tank had thicker glass, thicker silicone and two cross braces instead of only one.

for the best quality, I would go with either Aqueon or Miracles Aquariums (located in the GTA). I had some Miracles tanks up and running continuously for 17 years. they are very good too.

I would not buy a Perfecto based on what I have seen compared to Aqueon or Miracles. sure, the thinner glass and thinner silicone of the big tanks may hold, but for basically the same price, you can get better built tanks IMO.

the thing is, no tank manufacturer has a pefect record. doesnt matter who they are, at one time or another one of their tanks has leaked/broken.

thats just the chance we tank when dealing with large amounts of heavy water... :)

It is near impossible to find a good quality acrylic tank here, but if the chances of a nightmare is less likely, I will seriously consider it. What is the price difference?

- I'll look into miracles

one thing to keep in mind is this:

if you are buying brand new from the LFS, your chances of having a problem are probably a lot less than if buying second hand.

you save money, but you don't know what abuse the tank has had, just the fact that it gets drained and moved from them to you and refilled, resettled etc. is itself a potential to cause future problems..
