Has anyone tried building a tank with concrete board?
It would seem like a very good material , compared to plywood. It is water resistant , doesnt warp , rot etc.
I hope to build a large corner tank in the basement of our future house. I had thought of using concrete , but concrete board easier and maybe cheaper.

Any opinions would be appreciated. :)

it could work, but i think youd need a wood frame still.

Yes , I was thinking either would or steel frame.

Ok so I cant type , thats wood not would. :screwy:

See if you can find the manufacturers lab tests on the concrete board. If the burst and tear strengths are the same as they are for CDX plywood, you should be good to go. Tear results will indicate if the portion used at the bottom seam will hold its integrity from the tank bottom's increased water pressure. Burst results will indicate if any pressure bowing will occur at the center of each piece.
Concrete can be called water resistant but, not waterproof. Contact with water will begin to leech out the lime binders and alter your pH. The good news is a lot of concrete sealers are made from epoxy. Epoxy is inert to fish once it's dry. So, you can paint the concrete board any color or pattern you want.

Post the manufacturer's name.

if you are refering to something like concrete backer board, used for ceramic floor underlayment, it should work. like previously stated you would still need a wood frame. also the sheets are usually smaller, like 3x5 so the cost may be more, not to mention the weight will be more with the concrete board.

another thing to consider is that it may be harder to get a good joint seal with the concrete board vs. plywood, and cutting the concrete board is more difficult than wood. straight cuts are imperative in these types of tanks.

hope that helps

concrete board or'' DURROCK ''as it is known in the construction biss is way to messy(very dusty) and has some toxic chemical's(lime the kind that will break down fleash)and fast acting hardener's . added that may leak out in your tank and the weight is a factor too as for cutting(with a grinder or sheet rock knife) it's not much more difficult the plywood but it sure is a hell of a lot more moeny...

Thanks people , I think I'll go back to my original plan and use concrete , we'll see.

I would be leery of chemical leeching unless you line it.
