When I built my house twelve years ago, I made a two foot offset between my living room and my dining room. What this has given me is a 8' high x 8' wide x 2' deep offset in my basement. I've always thought about making this a fantastic fish tank. My walls are 8" concrete. This would give me solid concrete sides and back wall. I'm thinking the front viewing area would be anywhere from 6' to 7' wide, after leaving space for feed and return lines for filtration. Height wise would probably be about the same. My question is if I eventually do this tank, what do I seal the concrete with? Epoxy paint. Don't know what else is out there. Really don't want to fiberglass the whole thing and I shouldn't have to because the walls are solid concrete. This is just in the dream stage right now, so just getting some ideas. What do you think. Also give me your stocking ideas. Didn't do any of the math yet, so I don't know how many gallons this area would hold.

:welcome:

Twelve years and still dreaming??!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!

Price the glass or cell cast acrylic first, if you an afford that read Johnptc's thread on his monster tank next. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48640

Drylock, PondArmor & SaniTred are a few things to seal the walls & floor of your soon to be tank.

If all else fails, stack a bunch of tanks in the space and call it your fish room.

Well, time kind of gets away from you, ya know? With raising kids, college funds and weddings I'm finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Next month the youngest of the litter leaves the nest, so I will have more time and resources to do the things that have been put off for years. This tank would look awesome I believe, but I just don't know about the front to back length of only two feet. It would be plenty high and wide enough. Thanks for the info. and I'll get to it directly whether its a full wall tank or a bank of tanks. Either way, the space is definately going to be a fish room.

the main expense is most probably gonna be the glass.assuming ur tank will be 8' tall id estimate sumthing round the 25mm glass which over herei belkieve costs upwards of 2500 a sqm and then finding a peice of that size is difficult but once uve got over that then it should be smoooooth sayleng!!

glass is a killer but sounds like you already almost have a suitable tank! which is awesome. Good luck

What you can do to cut down costs is to have a slab laid at a height of 3-4 feet and have two tanks instead. This would require a lower glass thickness bringing the cost of the glass down.

I also thought about dividing the front viewing space into four seperate panes. I just don't know if the view would be distracting or if it would look ok. Could also make it two seperate chambers of the same tank interconnected with a tunnel tube connecting the bottom to the top section. I've seen other tanks done in a similar way with the tunnel tube connecting two side by side tanks. At first the fish didn't know what to do, but within two days they were going between the two tanks like they've done it all there lives.

1)Welcome to MFK. 2) Please show us some photos.
3) Im insanely jealous. sounds like all you need is filtration and glass!
i say be different, go buy some big koi and then get dozens of little friendly schooling fish.

Can't keep any MONSTER MONSTERS in it at 2ft wide...Maybe 30,000 neons :D

Dr. Joe..Yeah I'll probably only go as big as Jags or similar type fish if I would build this tank. Dovii would be out of the question.
