I'm considering buying an African knife for my 55 tank. At the moment the tank contains a Senegal bichir who is fairly small. My question is what size would my bichir have to be to be safe from an African knife in the 5 - 6 inch range?

Mine never paid attention when I got a 3" senegal, but heck, he ignores feeders, too. You're probably fine, but I'd go with benzjamin13's recommendation to be sure.

Alright, thank you. I'll go with the safest bet and add the smaller specimens I'm wanting while the bichir grows, saving the knife for last as he probably be the largest predator in the tank besides the bichir whom I'm assuming at full grown will rule the tank. As he thinks that he rules it now at only a couple inches.

Agreed, I put a new Bichir in my old FW tank that was about as big as a pencil and my then 5" ABK could care less. He didn't like feeders too?

But on a seperate note my Bichir when he became full grown would actually grab my ABK by the tail and try to eat him but since the ABK was so big he would usually end up just dragging him around the tank till I would put my hand in there and make him let go.

i dont see a prblem with it cause i have a oscar with mine they dont even look at each other

I don't see ant problems happening there anyways. ABK's arn't the most aggressive fish around, nor the most predatory, so a 3" or so bichir should be fine with a 5" ABK.

Ensure there is enough hiding space provided and that should take care by itself.

While African Brown Knives aren't really predatory, they are opportunistic. And again...the safest IMO would be 4" but it may be safe even at a smaller size.
