 I have a 90 gal i want to stock w malawi african cichlids. I've been told to get a large group like 20 or so , to prevent territorial aggression , but then there is the inch pper gallon issue ? Which metod is appropriate for these fish ? thank you

The inch per gallon rule is poop. I have never kept africans but have always heard that it best to overstock them so that its too crowded for them to set up territories. If you over stock you can compensate by over filtering.

Exactly. :grinyes:

yeah they hit it right on the head, ive never kept african cichlids (though i think acei's are really cool looking) - the inch per gallon rule is a sham, a 90 gallon can hold a large number of africans im sure, you just gotta make sure you have some really good filtration set up.. whenever your decisions are made and you're set up please post pics

thanks everyone !!! you've helped me decide, i already have a lfs that specializes in africans so no prob there ! Will 2 emperor 400's and weekly partials be good enough for filtration ?

I love mine. They have nice colors and interesting personalities. In regards to the inch per gallon rule; that's crap. With African's its best to overstock.

i think that would be fine but maybe should add a good sized sponge filter for bio filtration

If you go with mbuna 20 fish in a 90g might not be enough to spread out aggression, but this depends on the species you decide to go with. Just my opinion Auratus and the chipokae are devils, and like to kill most other mbuna.
