Just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were about using styrofoam on top of a diy wood stand and below a diy plywood tank.
Just thinking through this I can't recall any of the diy builds where I have seen this method used. My concern is that the warping of the plywood top will cause the bottom of the tank to not be level even if I shim the bottom of stand to level.
I have posted several other threads that have the pics of the tank build but thought it might be good to have a seperate topic here.
I have read many threads about foam used with glass or acrylic tanks, but not diy tanks.

if the tank is big, and has no braces on the bottom, if you put it on something flat and somehow there will be one grain of sand btw the bottom glass and the surface it's resting on - it may crack overtime - so YES I would suggest a styrofoam on the bottom of the tank ( unless it's framed then you don't have to. If your tank is not on level from whatever reason you can always put some shims under the stand and make it level that way ...

take care

In simple terms...no. Most people just make sure that the surfaces are flat and they are free from dirt. The plywood not necessarily crack from the point pressure caused by debris.

Plywood tank - no
Glass tank w/trim - no
Glass tank w/no trim - sure
Acrylic tank - sure
