Well, in case some of you don't know, I'm moving down to Mississippi to be closer to Magan, tired of this long distance crap. SOOO I had her test her water there, since she already has a tank and the test strips. Heres the thing, her water is boardering on soft/verysoft...yet the pH is 7.8ish.....what gives? Normally the softer the water the more acidic its gonna be...so this just confuses me. I'm worried about doing water changes cuz being soft, highly basic water I'm worried about pH swings. I was thinkin of addin crushed coral to make it more stable, but that will raise the pH more....any suggestions? Maybe peat/malaysian driftwood, but that would make the water even softer, and might not work.

A mix of peat and crushed chalk?

So much for Nebraska A WOO WOO!

That sucks just buy bottled water ;)

but seriously maybe you could do a holding tank for your water change water with peat and crushed chalk as well

Yeah, holding tank was a thought, let the pH settle and what not..her fish are doing aight, large water changes they wig. a wee bit though...:S...so worried about that.

It's not uncommon for water out of the tap to have a low kH, but to have a pH of over 7. My tap water is that way. It's around 7.6 or 7.8 pH with a kH in the 50-100 ppm (mg/L) range. Thus, the buffering capacity of the water is low. That means the pH, although slightly alkaline from the tap, is not stable and can crash with the addition of organic matter. I generally mix crushed coral in the substrate of all my tanks to raise the kH and keep the pH from crashing.

yeah, thing is i don't want the crushed coral to bump the pH......thats the only thing i am worried about...and i want to drop the pH...so the crushed coral will kinda negate the peat....don't cha think? I dunno...
