I've had a few electric jack dempseys with this feature. Not a mystery then cuz they've been inbred so many times "weird" features are expressed. But this female festae was purchased from a reputable vendor as "wild caught". What is your opinion why my festae has a beak face. Could it really just be a f100, inbred to death, or is this a natural occuring trait in the wild.
Either way I dont like it.

possibly random generated defect or growth or early deveolpment complication. wouldnt specifically say its from inbreeding.. although constant inbreeding would cause the trait to come through more

Deformities do occur in the wild too, but I wouldn't be too happy if I payed for what I thought was going to be a beautiful fish and it ended up being deformed.

looks like its jaws are just stuck out. when my oscars yawn sometimes they will look like that...but then the jaw simply falls back into how its suppose to be.

free swimming tank shots dont look much different. the net pic does make it look worse though.

Thats ashame , I have caught native fish that had deformities before but never with a beak it does kind of look like a perch mouth ....

Haven't seen this before on a festae...like Lach mentioned inbreeding alone is not the source of all deformities, although deleterious mutations become homozygous at a much higher frequency following extensive inbreeding.

IMO the beak in EBJDs may not be due to the inbreeding process itself - many people have outcrossed EBJD to regular JDs in their breeding projects. It's probably a mutation that's linked to the "blue gene".

In any event, I don't think there's any reason to think that your fish is f100 - not many people grow their fry out to that size before selling them. Might be a good idea to contact the vendor and see if you can get a replacement though.
