I know it's not recommended to use a pond filter on an aquarium. I was wondering how it would work out to connect a pond filter inline on the intake line of one of my canisters. I was thinking about my xp4 and filling it with mechanical filter media. Do you think that would work well. Thanks.

What are you thinking for a pond filter? I think most are designed to run a lot more pressure than you're Rena has

Probably won't work because most pond filters requires more pump pressure then your canister can provide.

I was just thinking something small just to help with mechanical since I don't think the renas have quite enough mechanical media. I didn't know if one of the smaller ones wouldn't need so much flow and I could maybe fill with pre filter.

I'm thinking of replacing my Marineland C530 Canister filter with another AC110 to make two AC110's. Canisters for the most part are highly over-rated IMHO. The AC110 does just as good even though it's HOB. I never understood the resentment towards HOB filters. Even with a canister filter you still have an intake/outtake hanging on the back. The difference is you don't have a heavy container you have to lug around every time you do maintenance. With AC filters it's so easy to squeeze sponge and put back and the biological works just as good as a canister. The water agitation on top is better for the fish too. I recommend AC110, plan on having them on all my tanks and do away with canisters for good.

I don't see any reason why it would not work. There are many different types of pond filters. Some can be used as sumps. Some can be used in-line. You would just have to find the right filter for your use.
