when would be the best time to separate the fry from the parents?
it been two weeks since the the fry hatched and the parents are still protecting the fry. the fry are kinda small but free swimming (wondering off from the parents) but still close. i feed the fry crushed pellets, and the parents bio gold pellets.
SO...when can i split the parents from the fry?
thanks for all your help.

The fry can be separated any time, but I've heard they grow faster when they're with the parents. You can keep the fry in until the parents lay eggs again.

they can be seperated whe ever you wan't to some people don't even hatch the eggs with there parrents

I would also suggest leaving them with the parents till they grow more. In my experiences they fry grow faster with the parents compared to wen i have seperated them right away.

my eggs hatched and i had fry for about4 days till my convict parents killed them or they all died, bit gutted myself but i know now to seperate them fast

thanks to all that helped with the fry. i have decided to leave them with the parents (under supervision). i'll seperate them in two weeks.

This is true when the parrents don't eat the fry or eggs

mainly for this reason

When left with the parents they will often eat there food above the fry which shreds it into fine pieces that fall threw there gill slits like all cichlids do the fry can eat this

Also there are many many tiny critters that live in all of our tanks if you have plants in your tank or its an old one thats had many fish come and go you have tons of these the parents will often stur up the gravel a little to set these bugs free and the fry will eat them they fry will also seek out and eat them on there own most fry tanks are bare bottom , new set ups , or have never had other fish or plants or used substrate to introduce these critters

So to put it simply they often get more food when with the parents and are in a larger system then a fry tank in most cases and larger tanks with more water per fish will make them grow faster

i had mine breed in a 10 gallon
but then after about 2 weeks the mom killed em all
so its better to keep them in biggger tanks mabey about 20 or 30 gallons when breeding if u wana keep the fry and parents together IMO

them now. feeders and futrue parents in the makeing.
