You probably know about my cons if you saw the thread "need help sexing this convict". The male is still aggressive, and when he gets too close to the female, he starts chasing her away. But both are eating fine, though. The male started to move some gravel out of a rock. I hope the male wants to breed, so I'm going to give them brine shrimp and bloodworms. Thanks if you could give help, I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time with a bad pair.

It just sounds like typical convict behaviour. As long as no serious injuries occur it should be fine. What size tank and how long have you had your pair?

The tank is 10 gallons, there are two rock on each side (the rocks have large holes in them). I've had them for just 2 days.

Hey it could be worse, all my breeding pair has done for the last week is stay crammed inside this little plastic cubby hole/cave that the two of them can barely fit into and they literally stay in their 24 hours a day? Yours ever do that? Have any idea why the heck their doin that?

Nope, not same here. They must be shy. Give them another big rock with a hole in it, or put some little dither fish or something. That's the best advice I got.

your convicts are behaving as all cichlids should. your male is chasing the female around because she's not ready to breed. it seems like you are on the right track by pumping them full of good food. i would say try getting your hands on a larger tank and put more decoration inside. flowerpots, pvc pipes and other rocks and driftwood. your convicts are hiding around when you are near because they aren't used to the surroundings.

Yes, I know, I should go with a bigger tank, but I barely convinced my parents to get my a 29 gal :irked:

Next I'll go look for a flower pot, but I need to know how to get it really clean, so it won't bring in disease or anything. Also, when do you think the female will be ready to breed?

All you must do with the flower pot is rinse it thoroughly under hot water assuming the clay flower pot is a new one. Do not use a used pot as it could contain fertilizer residue and other such harmfull things. Your female will be ready in perhaps a week-3 weeks but 2 days is not enough time to adjust to her suroundings let alone feel like breeding. Just set the temp around 80 degrees continue your feedings of bloodworms and brine shrimp toss a clay pot in the tank and youll have fry shortly. But be a little more patient and give them a week or two.

Oh, okay. I'll try that.
