i have a 29gal that's currently cycling and was thinking of putting maybe a single con in there with some other fish that can hold their own. what type of fish would go good with a single con? or should i go with a pair or maybe a con and firemouth? if i go with the firemouth could i have anything else in there as dithers? thanks for the info

i have asked this question on a lot of forums heres when i asked it here http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31889
They are fun to keep as a single fish. If you keep two get a mated pair as two males will fight. two females i dont know i thenk they might be fine. If you ge a pair expect a lot of fry. In a 29 gallon you wont be able to keep many fish. as far as dithers i have had no luck. iv tried livebearers but that didnt last too long and the livebearer was there first i might try guppies but dont think it will work. And when it is breeding time they will become more agressive. i have never kept firemouthes with cons but i have been told it works. good luck!

i'd go for a pair of cons or fm at most. a solo male fm would look good too. for dithers, maybe a school of danios with the odd casualty expected? good luck

If you are looking for dithers for central cichlids, consider barbs. Neon golden barbs are attractive and fast, and they don't get huge like a tinfoil barb or something. Tiger barbs are also a good option, cons' don't care much about them and will often leave them alone. The danios are not a bad idea, but make sure they are fairly large.

Yep, barbs are great dithers, especially for cons. I like tiger barbs.

my con pair just laid their first batch of eggs. I was skeptical at first wheather I should breed cons or not but I went for it and its really quite interesting!

As for dithers go with Tbarbs.

You know, I always considered serpaes to be little pansy tetras, but a friend of mine has kept them in a 66G with a breeding pair of nic's...the male was 10", and the serpaes were not bothered much, when they were chased, they were darn fast and could often dodge the big guys.

Yeah and they are a bit calmer than tiger barbs too, I always find tigers to be too skittish for my liking and just watching them tires me out. I have Serpaes in all my tanks, they don't seem to worry about the cichlids they share with, but have no worries keeping away if the need arises. Tiger barbs are a good choice......just not for me
