I'm Over Here Now
found a 12" for $199. is this a good price? he is totally flawless and gorgeous. i checked over every square inch of him and he's a stunner. everything i read is that they are solo tank inhabitants. any insight on these guys would be great. i do know all the basics like tank size, feeding, hiding spaces, use sand ect, but want to hear from people who do or have actually owned on of these.

My buddy had a fahaka since it was a little guy. In my opinion it was one of the most personable fish i have ever met. Bar sticking your fingers in front of it. Lol. He would follow you in the tank back and forth. There eyes move independently, so he would be up to the glass staring at you and watching the tv at the same time. When he was bored he would press his lips against the tank making this ridiculous face. .Any way they are a fish you want to keep separate, take it for what you will but my rule of thumb was if it can fit in his mouth he will eat it, or if he can dismember it to fit in his mouth he will eat it.

Definitely one of my favorite fish that i've ever owned...

Very personable fish, with great personality... recognizes their keepers, and very responsive...

Got my girl at 1.5" and shes now pushing 14"+

so is $199 a good price for a 12"er and is it better to find a smaller one to grow out or does it not matter?

I personally would prefer to grow out my own fahaka due to their fast growth rates, although i guess getting them young or old shouldnt make too big a difference...

But for reference, mine went from 1.5" to just over 12" within a year...

As for pricing, not sure what they normally go for over there so cant give you any input as far as that goes...

You can find small ones for $30, and by this time next year it'll be 12"+. I'd try to find one on Craigslist. People give them away for free at 12" because it's hard to find people willing to dedicate a 120g+ tank for a single fish. There's one for free in my area right now.
Personally, I'd grow one out.

You're gonna need a large tank that is fully established, to house him in. Do you know how to fishless cycle a tank?

Eh, not sure how the balance sheets/retail value works out for ex-keepers who wants to get rid of 12"+ fahaka puffers, but I wouldn't pay that much. Like abovementioned, fahaka is certainly a fish that you'd want to grow out from a small size. I got mine at 4" for 30 dollars.
