Hey guys and gals, I have a 100G with currently one ~10.5 inch fahaka puffer. As much as I love him, I kinda wanted to try something new, and I was considering making a community of a school of tiny fish and maybe one or two larger showpiece fish. Maybe something like a school of 100 or so neon tetras and one BGK, or a bunch of danios and a peacock eel. I've considered marine, but it sounds like too much work. What would you guys suggest? Nothing too ]V[onster considering it's a 100G, but I wanted a special fish that's rather exotic, preferably something that I can buy tiny that won't outgrow the tank (or eat the smaller fish). I like puffers and eels, but the only community puffer I can think of is the SAP. My golden puffer isn't aggressive, but he has his own tank already.

Any suggestions, MFKers?

if you want to go the planted tank route, i suggest getting a ton of killifish. many are very colorful and would pop against the colors of a heavily planted tank. you could add some nice plecos and maybe an african brown knife or a BGK

an elephant nose would be a cool fish to have with killis too

Yeah, I thought about that. They look cool, but they seem hard to care for, and I have REALLY hard water wher I live. They're not hard to find locally. But something like that is what I'm looking for.

A planted tank would look nice 'cause the tank is acrylic with great lighting, but I've never tried a big planted tank. Killifish aren't my thing, though; Too big and top-dwelling for me, I was looking for more of a middle of the tank schooling/shoaling fish.

how about red eye tetras rummy nose tetras and a few apistogrammas

That would look nice and colorful. I'm trying to spend under $120 on the tiny fish and like maybe $35 max on the main fish. Depends on how much I can sell my fahaka for.

if your water is really hard, and you really don't want plants (they do better is softer water anyways), then all these factors are screaming to go for african cichlids! you could have an awesome tank of very colorful haps or peacocks! and since your water is hard, you wouldn't need to worry about any special steps to ready your water

I knew someone was gonna say cichlids :naughty:. The fact is, I'm not a big fan of any cichlids other than frontosas, and I have three of them in my 130G. I COULD make a tank of fronts only, but I don't know the different type of frontosas (mobas? i dunno), so I'm afraid it would be a disaster. If I knew more, I'd be willing to do that, though.

have you ever seen pics of lake malawi peacocks?
