I am considering switching my aquarium to a SA setup, including PBass. However, my aquarium isn't ideal in terms of dimensions, it is roughly 6.5 long x 2.5 wide x 4 tall (~500 gallon). One of my concerns relates to the width, and at what point this might become an issue with a bass to turn around. I am interested in the "smaller" ocellaris.

Thinking about a stocking of pbass, geos and SD's, with a lot of driftwood. Would appreciate comments from those experienced about "turning" width, stocking, tank height use, etc.

2.5 feet wide is fine for a while for a pbass as long as you dont get a tem but if it was 4 ft WIDE it wouldve been way better.;) You definitely wont be disappointed with your pbass. You getting full size ones or are you gonna get some babies?

I agree with the size, I really wish I could just flip it on its side...

I would prefer growing out everything from a small size, any issues with the tankmates suggested? What exactly would 'a while' be roughly? 2 years? more or less?

around 2 years depending on what size you get them at and how much u feed, wc schedule, growout tank size, etc. If you get small guys get some guyana occels from snookn21 they will look like STUNNERZ when they get big. You could also go big with getting some cichla occelaris cf. brokopondos from tangledupincichlids. Those are lookers too;)

yes, I have seen those snookn21 has and would be interested, but if I do make the switch it will probably be several months yet as I want to revise my stand, buff out the acrylic and some other tasks before being back in business...

What do you think is best, a species only with live plants or a mix of pbass, SDs and Geos with silk plants?

I am a bit concerned about keeping live plants from growing out of control with the high tank depth. I like the look of PFS mixed with Fluorite black sand that could work for live plants...

Also, what cats or other bottom clean up crew do you keep with pbass? I have seen several comments that RTC can be risky..or is species only better?

well you can go with either one. With a mix of pbass you can get a variety of colors such as with azuls, bahia kelberis, orinos, etc. I prefer a mixed community personally. SDs and Geos are good dithers as long as they dont fit in the pbass's mouth. Some cats are bichirs of all sorts, tigs, RTCs, TSN, lima shovelnose, vulture cat, juruense etc. RTC can be risky if you dont watch how bigs he grows cuz in no time he might be big enough to swallow your pbass. Other than that you are fine. But since your tank is only 2.5 ft wide id steer away from the RTC and TSN especially since they grow extremely fast.

YOur tank should be good for the smaller species of cichla for a while if not life. Occelaris and tems are some of the bigger species of cichla. Kelberi and orino's should be able to live in that tank for a while if not for life.

My prior suggestion was part of a "honey I didn't know they would get SO big" argument to upgrade. I've already got my eye on a larger tank with better footprint...:D
