What would be the correct lighting for a 40g (36Lx18Wx16H) reef tank?

4x39w t5
6x39w t5
8x39w t5

I MAY go out and take a shot at a reef tank. I am planning on using an emperor 400 filter, live rock, corals, live sand. I have not chose fish inhabitants yet. I would love some ideas if anyone has any to offer. I plan on doing research b4 hand but I am trying to get a general understanding of the basic equipment needed. I currently own a 125 freshwater tank that is thriving so I do have a general knowledge of fish. Are you supposed ot vacuum reef tank sand? ANY help would be great

it all depends on what you going to be keeping really... what type of corals etc ....
Metal halide will be much stronger T5 lighting and will be better for a coral tank but you can get away with T5 lighting for most coral..

you have to go and have a look at what you want to keep... then research them and try and provide that for them... if you were only going the fish route then T8 - T5 is fine ;)

I definitly want some percula clown fish, a royal gramma, My GF wants a goby. I do like some corals nothing rediculous but something to make my tank pop with color. What other fish would be good in a tank this size, I would like to research them

Sounds like the fish you have selected will be about enough. Be advised, salt gets pricey and if your keeping fish and corals your going to want to do some protien skimming.
