So ive got a huge ammonia spike in my tank. I did a 45% water change the other day, cleaned out the filters and replaced the carbon and im stopping by the store later today to pick up some chemicals to try and help regulate it. Its a 125, is there any other advice on a way i can control this? like i said i already did a water change, cleaned the filters, and im picking up chems.

Isn't this the tank that's very overstocked with all of the catfish? I'd say the best way to control is to move a lot of these fish! Sorry, but when stuff like this starts happening, you really have to consider your stocking-to-volume ratio. Your water changes are about the best thing to do. I wouldn't add "chemicals" per se, such as in Ammo-Lock or any of that stuff, but I would try and get a hold of some seeded media. You wouldn't happen to have some extra HOBs running that you could transfer over, would you? Second best thing would be to add one of the Bb-in-a-bottle that actually works -- Dr. Tim's One-And-Only or Seachem Stability. Also, you'll need to figure out what could have happened to throw off your cycle... you know, the usual suspects... over-cleaning, over-feeding, using tap water, etc., but I think your stocking is an issue, and if it's not right now, it will be next month, or whatever. You've got a lot of fish in that tank.

Cleaning the filters may have been a bad step...

what filters do you have on it, canisters?, i just fill all my canisters with ehim substrat pro, you could always get some cycle, but if the guy is right and theres just too many fish, unless you put a ridiculous number of filters on the tank, you need to move the fish

im a guy, its natural for me to just say.... guy, sorry if i offended you

Oh, no, it's okay... tscharf and I had a conversation about this the other night, is the only reason I mentioned it. LOL sorry for confusion.

problibly need more filtration i had a similar crash and lots some cats and others...got a fx5 now it good...remeber the cats need ALOT of filtration...are they shedding that would make it worse...

eh the tank isnt over stocked, there is only one cat whos even close to a foot everyone else is around 6 or 7 inchs, if that. and yea ive got a couple extra HOB's i can throw on it. thanks all for the help.

i got it all under control last night, just tested the params and eveything was good. did a partial WC last night and stirred up the gravel in the bottom, and everything went right back to normal. Still gunna put the extra HOB or 2 on though, and deff considering getting an extra canister filter.
