Well I am almost to a decision to go salt. I know pretty much what I need to do to get it going. Thinking the change from fresh to salt will bring back the old feeling I had for this hobby that has long and pasted. As I know if I do not changed my current setup or get some different exotic fish I will lose all interest in this hobby and I do not want that to happen.

I know mostly about salt water, but i do not considered myself a pro at it. I just have some questions about it all.

Right now I am running a fresh water setup. I know about converting the water to salt and live sand and such, but how much live rock for marine fish only tank do I need for a 180 gallon tank 6'x2'x2'. I have an idea of what I want to do. As I am looking forward to doing puffers, groupers and such. Perhaps later I will do a reef tank, but since I have no overflow kit on the 180 marine fish will be good for now.

Any info or tips on how to get started or some good sites to point me in the right direction will be appreciated.

I think the amount of liverock normally is 2lbs per gallon, but for fish only with liverock [FOWLR] I would go for 1lb per gallon. Or no liverock. If you decide to go with liverock you are going to need a protein skimmer. Here are a few examples of my tanks.

hey thanks alot. great tanks by the way.

Wow, all those large angels in 1 tank!!! They don't fight? How big is the tank?

And how is your Morish doing. I've heard almost impossible to keep. How long have you had it?

180 gallon. No aggression because there's not much in decoration for them to claim a territory. Moorish Idols have been in tank for 6months now. I think they do better in groups. They eat everything.

you can always skip the skimmer buy overflows and do a large fuge(highly recomend) and then you will have no problem going to any corals and after awhile no nitrates either... as far as live rock there is no set number of pounds per gallon... put how ever much rock you wanna see in the tank...

craig those angels and idols are awsome great collection...

as far as lbs of rock per gallon goes, it is hard to come up with an accurate ratio. different rock from different parts of the world have different densities.
I have 175 lbs of carribean rock in my 125 and it takes up a good portion of the tank. Figi rock is less dense than carribean.175 lbs of Figi would overwhelm my tank. i guess my point is look into different types of rock and go with what looks the best to you.
