I just purchased a 240 gallon tank with 6 holes drilled into the bottom. 1 in each back corner, and the other 4 evenly divided across the middle. The whole bottom was covered in a mesh like screen box, kind of like a undergravel filter plate.

The tank was being filtered this way with a Lifegard system. The 4 holes drained
and the 2 in the rear were returns.

I want to get rid of this system totally and go with a wet dry trickle filter. Is there anyway I can do this by using the existing holes without having to patch anything up? I was thinking of raising the drain holes with pvc to the water level and also raising the returns with pvc. Is there a better way of doing this? Do I have it all wrong? please help with any other ideas.

You could put in threaded bulkheads, then screw in a plug. That way they would be sealed and you could cover them. Just a thought...

Best, easisest I`ve seen.
Black or for some X-tra $ & hassle, clear.

ive seen some tanks before with the same holes and they just ran pvc straight up and made two of them overflows. they both had strainers at the tops. you think it would look stupid right in the middle of the tank? for some reason i thought it looked kinda nice. i have pair of long silver arowanas so it would make them swim more snake like. haha.

ha i was about to post my link :) easiest way is to get bulkheads and plug the damn things up. use the two back ones for overflows, and keep on with a valve for a drain. then just run regular returns over the top.

all those vertical pipes in the middle would look horrible lol. just keep the two in the back!

Thanks for being honest. It would look horrible. The idea of the overflows in the rear corners makes sense. im gonna read your thread now. you guys helped me out a lot. thanks.
