i have a 30 gallon tank that i want to convert into a african cichlid tank, preferably mbunas. but i like peacocks too. but i think i could put more mbuna's into a 30. so what are you're thoughts on how i should set it up, rocks, fish, etc. oh and i want to breed them too.

to small of a tank for most africans. look into shell dwellers or smaller dwarf africans? Psuedotropheus ( forgot the last name ) males are blue ( kinda like demasonii ) and females are yellow

and btw, your stock in you 29 and 30, those fish are in way to of a small tank.. 29 and 30 is way to small for any of those fish ( besides the convict and jewel )

they are all relativley small. my parrot in my 30 is only 3-4 inches, the green sev is only like 2. and my jack is only like 4-5 inches, my pleco is rather large tho tipping the length of like 7-9 inches. and i had a small little breeding group of yellow labs, and they did pretty well in my 29. cause most breeders use 30's for breeding aquariums. but yes demasoni are one of my favorites just hard to find in my area without buying a bunch of misc mbuna.

For African cichlids in that size aquarium, I would pick one species. Species tanks can be very rewarding, especially when they breed. Start with unsexed juvies, and when they mature pick the out the best male or two to leave with the females, and remove the other males. Peacocks are so much easier to sex, and for the most part less aggressive (which is good for that size tank). I've also had success with cherry red zebras with this method without removing any males (as they are harder to tell the sex).
