Some may have read my other posts indicating that I'm going to have to part with my sumps and switch to canister filters. One issue that I've not addressed yet are those overflows. How would I go about removing them? Also, I can simply just plug the 4 holes in the bottom of the tank and cover with gravel right? I'm planning on running 2 Fluval FX5s and an Aquaclear 110 in place of two AGA Model 3 sumps, for those wondering.

I've done the same thing on a number of occasions out of preferance and you're right there are a number of options. You can plug the holes and remove the overflows or you can also use them as they are and plumb the fx5's directly into them. Ive done this a couple of times with sealed pressure systems and it worked out very well.

Use the holes for your canisters... as for the overflows, I'm 90 % sure there just siliconed in, so it should be as easy as cutting out the silicone with a razor blade (be carefull not to damage the silicone used to hold the glass together - that would be bad).

oop....sorry about that dorkfish is right. I forgot that part of your question. Overflows are siliconed in on MOST tanks and are simple to remove with a razor blade and use later but some of the acryllic tanks I've run into have them glued in place and it's a real mess trying to remove them.

Depends, the ones I have installed have rubber gaskets that are between the glass and the bulkhead nut. All you need to do to remove is simply unscrew the nut.
