So i just setup my 55 gallon This past weekend, and i got myself 5 convicts, and a bunch of guppy feeders. I set up various caves and hiding areas, which include a tree with about 20 branches sticking up, and many caves arou the tank, i have atleast one pair that is coupled already. I have another pair that flirt around alot, possibly starting another pair. I also have a Juvenile Convict that could be either male or female... Its small(prolly a little male). So how long before the pairs start to breed? they seem pretty social, constantly swimming , and they are very aggressive eaters... the males are around 2.25" and the females are 1.5". also what are the best foods to feed these guys? they love bloodworms and brine shrimp, and they seem to like cichlid stix too... they only chase the guppies but dont really eat them..How long until they breed? And once they do how long again until the eggs hatch? :naughty: :naughty:

I had 1.5 inch cons bred....Took them three days to acclimate from the lfs....Then I had a full grown 4+ inch pairs that bred, but took at least 2 weeks acclimation....Whatever your case is, cons will breed in no time....They are known as the "rabbits of the water"....Eggs hatch after 3 -4 days in 78-81 degree water....:headbang2

Should breed today, then again next week and again and again and again..........................................................................

Keep feedin bloodworm - they love it and it gets them into condition fast. If they are pairing off already, then they will probably spawn this week.
Just look for a pair that are cleaning and guarding a cave, and making a pit in the gravel.
3-4 days on average for the eggs to hatch then the same again befrore the wrigglers become free swimming...THEN feed the fry baby brine shrimp and not before.
Until they are free swimming, they don't eat - they are still absorbing their yolk sac.

Oh - and I probably wouldn't bother with the guppys, your Cons are too small to be eatin them I think. Unless they are in there to supply fry for the Cons to eat. In which case, def. pull them out. The last thing you want to do if you're trying to breed your Cons is to condition them to eatin fry!

So do you think just having some guppies in the 55G Convict tank will have a negative effect? Negative as in, they will start to eat fish alive, then they will eat their own fry alive? Could this happen? Should i take out the Guppies? (they look cool, they give the upper part of my tank a nice look) Opinions PLEASE?

What are your tank dimensions? If it's got a bit of height, I don't suppose havin the guppys in there will make much difference. Cons generally don't use the upper part of the tank. I suppose the best thing is just to leave them in there and see what happens.
If the Cons go into breeding mode and get very aggressive, they might kill the guppys. No idea if they'd eat them then. Havn't kept ANYTHING else with my Cons, so can't give you any kind of answer based on experience - just guessing I'm afraid.

My tank is i think a standard 55 G.. i know its 48" x 13?" x 18?" does that sound close? I will just leave the guppies in there for now, and see what happens.. More rock is a given, but thats all i could get in the 7 hours or so i was running around gettin supplies and settin up my project... more driftwood too!
