I just got a 1.5 inch convict. Is it possible to sex them this young? she does have some reddish scales on her belly so i am thinking its a she. She is now in my turtle 55 gallon rubbermaid container. It has alot of obstacles that slows down the turtle but not the fish so im sure it has a good chance of surviving. I got her about 4 hours ago, she is now hiding in a cave and refusing to come out. Is that normal? Even my rosy red doesnt hide, it just swim away from the turtle.

That's a pretty tiny convict, and she knows she's a prey item at this size. She'll probably hide for a long time. Most small cichlids do if they're alone.

Any red scales at all probably indicates she's a female.

She is still surviving after a 20 hours. the minnow survived 2 weeks. Its funny to watch the convict bullying the minnow, and when my turtle goes back in the water from basking, they run away together. Lol its a smart convict im pretty sure it will survive. I put in a ovation 1000 internal filter to boost the filtration. the convict sometimes hide between the filter and the wall, the space is not actually really huge so she has to tilt herself to get it. is that unhealthy? She has 3 other caves she can actually hid it. I took out the flowerpot because there is only one way out and she could get trap in there when the turtle comes

She's probably hiding there because it's the smallest space she can fit into and that's where she feels the most secure. She sounds pretty freaked out to me. You might want to put the flowerpot back in there, if that's where she liked to hide the most.

i think her favourite hiding place is a turtle ornament which is also a cave. Im not going to put the flowerpot back. It almost killed her, the turtle saw her in the flowerpot and was going for her put i pull my turtle back and let her escape. I think she is getting less shy now, she is starting to chase the minnow.

I would not keep a turtle and convict together, she is shy now but once she settles in she will be going after that turtle. And any pinkish on the belly means female so your right, she should get some other colours like blue on her top fins as well.

Yes, if she has any pink on her belly she is a female. Some females also have colour on their fins. Males will be solid black with no colour. Here is a pic of mine.
