So I'm setting up and cycling a 48" long 55 gal breeder tank for 6 Convict Cichlids. I'm going with gravel substrate but the rest is still undecided. What plants, rocks, woods or other would you all suggest/have had successful experience with for a setup such as this? I am also open to trying out a different easy-to-breed cichlid if anyone has suggestions!

Thanks!

Flowerpot, though not natural, will give your convicts a cave to lay their eggs in. Jungle Val, java fern, are some of the plant species to have. But keep in mind java fern and anubias need their ribosomes showing, so you can attach them to rocks or driftwood.

I put a filter that I've been running on a tank for about 2 years on the 55, along with the filter that came with it and also included some floating and sinking rocks from my mature tanks which really sped up the cycling process. Water parameters are perfect, so I went out and purchased 4 convicts between 1.5-2". I have seen little to no aggression so far, but I realize it is still early to tell. The plan is to let them pair off and then rehome the other two.

My question now is, could I throw one centerpiece fish (JD, GT, FM, Blue Acara which I currently have and is ~2.5-3" long) in there with the convict pair? The centerpiece fish would be bigger and probably of similar aggression level, so I'd be hoping that he could hold his own and maybe the convicts don't mess with him too much. I know the aggression level goes way up when breeding. If not, can I fill the tank with anything else (Danios)? Or does it really come down to the temperament of the convict pair?
