I have a pair of convicts in my 60 gallon tank with about 8 other fish, all around the same size as the convicts. Well my convict laid eggs on a rock and like good parents they were very protective of the eggs and no one got near them. The eggs were there for 2 days then one morning I see the male come by and eat a couple, then the female chased him off. well fastforward another day and I go to look at the eggs and they are ALL gone.

in the process I put a small divider in there to help them keep the eggs safe so I think the convicts ate their own eggs. is there any way I can prevent this for next time?

is it better to remove the JUST the rock/eggs and let it hatch on its own in a separate tank? Or do I take the convict pair with the rock/eggs and take them to another tank at once? thanks much!

The first 1-3 spawns of many cichlids often go wrong. They soon learn, and do it right.

Just let them be, cause in 2 weeks, you'll have more. And the following month, a million more!

weird.. well I saw them messing around in the corner of the tank.. but I do not know what to look for if they are actually DOING the deed... ?

well I know my female is pretty young.. she just last week got some color on her belly and on the tips of her fins.. now she has some nice color to her on the tips and her belly. the make is about 4" they could be new parents.

Ive had my cons down all her eggs one night cuz the GT was in here hidding hole for a little. So i think if they feel they are in trouble they will eat them to save them... kinda.. lol
