What should i do if my male is getting to aggressive to my female, they are in a 55gal, by themselves, plenty of hiding spots, still have not spawned and they have been in there for about 3 weeks now, what should i do. male is chasing her around a lot, if he does it to much, could it stress here out?

bump

Could stress her out too much or worse. You could add another target fish or two for the male and female to take there aggression out on and increase their chances of bonding. Are these two a proven pair or is it their first time?

I would introduce more females and let him pick the one he likes and take the others back once he picked his mate and spawns. I believe you will have better success with this then just putting two in and hoping they work.

would dithers work, if so what should i get

If the two are not bonding...dithers isn't really going to help them bond. The advise that I gave above is probably your best bet in trying to get a pair of convicts and they are probably just the same price that you were going to pay for dithers. Get about 2-3 more females and i'm sure he will bond with one of them.

If there not an established pair just get more females. In a 55 you even have enough room for a couple of males and 3 or 4 females to increase your odds.

Go buy say 3 female convicts and put them all in, not only will he spread the aggression between the 3 new ones, but when he does form a pair bond with one you can remove the others.
if you put target fish in, giant danios, boesmani rainbows or tiger barbs have worked for me in the past, danios and rainbows are really fast, whereas the tiger barbs are quick but they also can take a beating if they get caught cause they are quite aggressive towards eachother.
