ON to the question the tanks fluorescent lights ballast broke or burned out I tried different bulbs etc ( lighting came with the tank new) Anyways I gotta get a new one. But I was starting to think maybe it would benefit the breeding and ease stress if there was not a light on ever ? It doesn't get a ton of residual light but does get some there is a shaded window across the room but otherwise its basically a fish room that I go in maybe two times a day. Would having a light on a timer help their breeding schedule ? Or should I leave it off ?

Back story :)
I freed up a 20 gallon recently as I upgraded my Q tank to a 40 breeder. Its a well established tank and I kept a pleco (poop machine) in there until I found the right convicts today. I got two females and two males. I am already enjoying their personalities very cool fish ! I am looking to get some disease free feeders for my Polyterus only tank. I want to be able to vary their diet as much as possible and healthy feeders will not only keep them active but hopefully will help them act as natural and active as possible.

Thanks for any help guys ! First post in this area of the forum :D

ADD WATER

Thanks, any input on the lighting ? Any suggestions beyond adding water lol ? Which I did :) The tank is established and has been for over a year so its nice and has a healthy bio bed.

put the lights on a time schedule and I would only put one male and then when he picks his lady remove the other

having the lights on a cycle will definitely encourage a cycle in the fish and increase breeding in my thoughts

but really with convicts all ya gotta do is add water ahahahhahahahahhah

ok thanks James....

i left the light on my convcits 24-7 iono why i did tat but they breed anyways. i had 3 pairs breed in 1 tank at once. i tried to remove 1 pair sucess on the first pair. so i tried the other 2 pair. they scatter around the tank so i lost the pair. so all i did was taken the eggs from the other pair and place all into 1 seperate tank. they all hatched and i had so many. pretty easy. good luck

Right on , I think ill play it by ear. From my research and experience breeding African cichlids / molly's and platy in the past it seems to be a rather easy undertaking :) Wish me luck.
