convict breeding

You know, if you're not too bent on Convicts, think about Brichardis (Fairy Cichlid). They are beautiful and breed just as easily as convicts. Your LFS however will be more likely to take them off your hands and may even give you money/store credit for them.

JMHO - I have both so. . .

I had a 2000 pond in my basement with 55 breeder red bellies. I put a pair of convicts in there as a live food source as they breed so readily. The convicts staked an old flower pot in the corner of the tank , and set up house. Not only were there hundreds in the spawn, but the piranhas refused to eat them( They must taste bad). The parents kept the school away from their"territory: attacking any that got close. I had to drain the pond to get rid of them, and there was no resale value in the convicts. Just something to think about. :(

Convicts like most other Cichlids have very strong spines, and this could get stuck in your other fishs' throats, so just make sure if you use them to feed, use them when they are young.
I've never bred birchirs, but now that i hear that advice i may begin to, i have a breeding pair of convicts, and i'm raising ou tthe fry so that i can keep the best specimens.
gl with whatever you do.

oh im sure they taste good, convicts are amazing parents tho and will protect there breeding area and fry at al costs

I had a pair of birchardis and they are awsome parents. But its so hard when i find a pair the lfs either wants to sell them for 50 dollars or dosn't want to sell them at all. i think thats dumb. i also seen a little pair of pink convicts they look real cool. But i mostly like the honduran red points!

I've had a breedin' pair of convicts for a while, but never had any luck with the eggs actually hatching. They usually start turnin' white and then the parents end up eating them. Any suggestions? Also, what's the oldest (and safest) recommended age of the fry before you shouldn't use them as feeders anymore?

I think I must be a doofus or someting cuz I bought 4 con's assuming they would "replicate" and they are in my 125 and have had them for a few months now... havent seen anything attempted yet... but maybe I just have too many other fish in my tank no?
