I am considering putting a male and female convict into my semi aggressive tank.
Will they spawn in a pit in the substrate or do they need a rock to put the eggs on?
Will the male harm the female?
Will they harm their tankmates?

i dont know much about convicts but i do know they spawn in flowerpots and they will attack other fish when they breed

they spawn anywhere and will take down any fish to protect their fry

my convicts have always bred in clay flowerpots. i have slate and everything in there but they always choose inside of the flowerpot. convicts can and will be very aggressive to other tank mates and they guard their fry like crazy! i would probably recommend putting a divider in the tank or put them in a separate tank so they don't kill anybody else....but have some dither fish such as zebra danios in with them so the convicts don't get bored and eat their own fry! you might want to put a few females in there so the male can pick a mate then take out the other females when they pair up. good luck!!:):)

Ok thanks. Since i cant set up another tank right now and dont like sividers, i think i wont breed them. If i end up getting any at all ill get a single female.

get a pink female really pretty

Pink Convicts are much more aggressive than the black(zebra) cons are. Once they breed they are excellent parents and will guard their fry well. After while if the male is ready to breed again and the females isn't (and vice versa) one may kill the other. You don't have to have a clay pot for them to mate and lay eggs in. Mine first laid the eggs on the glass and then built a nest in the gravel. One of the LFS's had them breed in the display tank with only a sand bottom. 2 Convicts; Will Spawn. Anywhere, anytime!
