the rock...671!!!
I recently purchased a pair of convicts, both around 1in. I'm hoping to breed them and have noticed that they are constantly fighting. is that normal? i know convicts are very aggressive fish, even to each other, but it's just the 2 of them in a 20 gal. i'm pretty sure i have a male and female. one has a pinkish hue to it's body and the other has longer fins. when or will they stop fighting? should i just get another male of female and try again? maybe they don't like each other....any info on this would be greatly appericated.

It's best to buy a group of 6 and wait for them to pair up. Then return the other 4. I did it your way and bought a pair. My male did not like the female at first but then obviously something clicked and now I have a cloud of fry in my tank.

same. I got a female from a friend and then bought a male. At first they hide and fought sumtimes but then they got used to eachother and I have already had 3 sets of babies and i think another is on the way. Mine are in a 10g. They way u tell male from female is the female has orange on her belly and the male dosen't

Probably just to small right now once they mature they will be fine....

thanks for all the info, one of mine has a pinkish hue to it's belly. is it still a female? or it has to be orange? there still fighting, but i'll give them a couple more days.

The male will have absolutly no color on them besides the stripes. With the exception of on the lining of the fins. Where as of recent my male has gotten. The Male should be bigger than the male, most of the time. With the exception that Convicts can breed pretty young and it is possible that the male could still be young, seeing how males get a lot bigger than the females. And of course the males anal fin will be long and come to a point as with a female where they are not as long and are more of a shape of an arrowhead.

yeah, my other convict has no color on it besides the stripes and his fins are alot longer. hope they start to get along, can't wait to see a bunch of mean lil convicts

You would have better luck buying between 5-7 convicts and wait until you notice a pair forming. When I started I purchased 7 convicts (total) from three different stores and just waited for pairs to form. Out of the 7 original convicts I was able to get 2 good pairs and now have hundreds of convict fry. DO you know anyone interested in buying or trading convicts????

my convicts have stopped fighting. i think, they are now following each other, pushing each other with there tales, are they mating? was funny watching them try to intemidate each othere by constantly pretending to ram heads with each other, but they stopped that. they never actaully locked lips though. unlike my GT and salvin...
