I am wondering if a firemouth and Jewel are good companions for my convict.

Yes I only have 1 in a 20 gal, hes an inch long.

I would get the firemouth and Jewel at the same size as the convict. Also there are plenty of hiding spots and plants inbetween my rocks and driftwood I setup.

Or should I just stick to 1 con and 1 firemouth?

Sorry didnt read your full post a 20g will only be good for a single convict no tankmates.

Give it a shot. Ususally Cons will be MOST aggressive when they are breeding but in this case, the aggression may come due to the fact the Con has been in the tank longer.

Beware that a 20 gallon, no matter how many hiding places, isn't very large.

I would:
1) Buy a used 55 gallon off of MFK so my inquiry would be satisfied. If that can't happen

1a) Do a water change and put the Con in a bucket
2) Re-arrange the tank
3) Put all of the "proposed" tenants in the tank and watch closely.

If it doesn't work out, take the fish back for store credit towards a lay-away for a 55 gallon ;)

if you get something like a 30 long you can keep the convict together with one of the others, but not in a 20...preferably a 55 would be ideal

the guppies would be the snack with my cons I wouldnt do it you could try breeding them in the 20 and put the con and the firemouth in a bigger tank feed them the fry
I wouldnt think it would be worth trying to breed the guppies for food unless you like the guppies as another comunity tank.

Well since my con is small I will give it a try, Hes still small so he wont be able to eat the guppies right away.

I dont think Ima add the firemouth as it seems 20 gals is too small for a firemouth and a con.

but I will do 5-6 guppies and see how that goes.

Just a quick update,

I went and got a jewel cichlid that is a little bigger than my con. There was aggresion and the jewel thought it was boss for the first couple weeks.

That has changed

My con now swims freely all over the tank while the jewel stays in the corner.

Every now and again while the jewel swims near the top he might divebomb the con but the con doesnt run away anymore and flares up and stares the jewel back to his hiding corner.

My con is awesome =)
