Just wondering if there is anything special I should be doing for my striped convict cichlids fry. They just appeared today, I didn't even know there were eggs in there. I've never had fry before. I removed the other convict from the tank, I just got them less than 2 weeks ago and she wouldn't let the other one move in the tank so I assumed they weren't a pair. I ground up some flakes into a real fine powder hoping they'll feed on that but I'm not sure. HELP!
What other fish are in the tank with them? I move mine into a 10 gal grow out tank once they are about two weeks old. Once they are in the grow out I feed them "First Bites" for the next two weeks. When they get about four weeks old I start feeding them frozen brine shrimp three or four times a day. I also do 50% water changes every other day. When they reach about 1" long I put them back into my big tank as feeders.

Baby brine shrimp, or BBS, are easily hatched within 2 days.....Freshly hatched, these small shrimp are packed with protein that "jump start" any fry.......I feed my con fry bbs, and within a week they already have color growing along the sides of the body........Within 8 weeks, they are almost one inch.........When fry are 2 weeks old after hatching, they can be fed crushed flakes........But always, ALWAYS, feed newly hatched fry baby brine shrimp........
They do fine on crushed flake from day 1 (if you have quality flake that is). That's all mine ever get. I've got a 20 gal with about 100 fry right now. Growing out for my puffers. This is the third batch I've raised. I've moved the biggest (he's a good inch already, about 8 weeks old) into the sump of my 150.
My first batch is probably going on 6 or 7 weeks at this point. At first I was crushing up hikari carnivore pellets & cichlid staple (its all I had) and then after 4 or 5 weeks I started using NLS small tropical community pellets & hikari micro-pellets.
Mine seem to be growing a LOT slower than what other people are reporting though...I'm not 100% certain but I think they're probably anywhere from 5-7 weeks old and the largest of them MIGHT measure at 1/2". They've just in the past 2 weeks or so started looking more like fish than like tadpoles.
Sadly though, my male developed some sort of disease (giant white spot on his back, lethargic...:\) so I just took all the fry and moved them to my 55 & 65. From here on they won't be getting fed anything they can't scavenge, they're food now.
