i just introduced a convict cichlid thats about an inch long to my tank. at first he seemed to constantly attack my 5 tiger barbs that are all slightly bigger but now hes been in there a couple days and it appears hes schooling with the tiger barbs and they all seem to get along great. from what ive heard this is very odd. is the lack of aggresion someting to be worried about? has anyone else experienced this?

It does sound pretty odd. I've never heard of this before but, I would like to see it. As far as the lack of aggression, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As long as he is eating well and staying active I'd just sit back and enjoy the show.

hes eating and seems pretty active. its kinda cool seeing the difference in how they move together. i was planning on moving him to a new tank next week but if this is nothing to worry about i might just keep them together unless his attitude changes. thanx!

Well, my baby convicts school together. Is it possible that he's using the barbs are surrogate school mates?

Should be okay till the convict gets bigger, then it may be bad for the barbs

My pink convict female thats the same size is doing the exact same thing with a group of harlequin rasboras :) Normal behaviour for a short while I think.

I think this is normal behavior for small/young cichlids, and I've seen it happen often in my tanks. The little guy probably realizes he's small enough to be easy prey, and is finding safety in numbers. He'll outgrow this with time and size, I think.

Convicts are smart, He knows how to fit in and stay safe when he is young. When he matures be prepared to scoop out some dead barbs. Its not "odd" behavoiur because its intellegent. I think its a survival stratagy.
