State of chaos
The Convict Cichlid (Cichlasom nigrofascium) is one of the most common fish in the aquaria trade today. They are part of wide-ranging genus, Cichlasoma. The are found n Black Striped, Albino, and Gold Marbled coloration. They can reach 5 inches long and require 29 gallons. They also need a heater, as they hail from the steamy Amazon jungle. They will eat most foods put in the tank, from processed foods to meaty foods, from shrimp to worms to fish. They are very active and while they may mate and be social they are aggressive and need space. They should not be kept with small or sensitive fish such as Livebearers or Glass Catfish. They prefer to have driftwood or plants to hide under.
They may suffer in cool teperatures because, unlike some species, they do not acclimate well to enironments other than that of the Amazon River. They are very intelligent, like most Cichlids, and can recognize the owner like a dog if given correct living coditions. Convicts readily spawn and lay eggs inside caves. They defend their nests, eggs, and fry viciously. They may hybridize with Firemouths (C.Meeki) or natve Texas Cichld. They must have deep water, as they inhabit the deeper portions of the rio Amazon. Like most tropical Fish, they require weekly water changes, or more if they are temporarly (quarentine, transport) in a small container. They should only have a small amount of gravel, as they are messy but should have some gravel, because, like most Cichlids, they enjoy "playing" with gravel and digging holes, pushing it around, making piles, etc etc.
In conclusion, this often overlooked fish is great fish worthy of true "pet" status if treated correctly. If you have a spare 30 gallons, this fish should be in your top 3 choices.

I disagree with a lot of it but nice try;)

This was info fr my grandparents tenants, who have 2 Cons in an unheated bucket after tank break. I said i would print out an article online.
It turns out that the article i found was one I wrote 5 minutes later, stressing the need for 29 gallons and a heater.
Oops!:headbang2
Im not in it to trick them, but those were 2 beautiful Cons (a pair) and for their sake I decided to help out.

Sorry i sounded harsh i didnt mean it that way. i dont neccesarily agree with what you are doing but thats for you to decide.

Hmmm. I do not agree with this method either. You could not find ANY real info on cons? I do not believe that...

It is far easier to regurgitate information you have read on the internet than to have the actual experience of keeping a certain fish and learning about it.

Bravo

I think your Article is well written... although much of the info is debatable while some things are simply inaccurate.

There is plenty of "professionally written" information out there about tConvicts, and most of it will agree they need warm water (usually requiring a heater to achieve) and as adults require a 20 long or larger. Your suggestions will hold a lot more weight if you are able to print off actual Profiles from respected sites. It will be quite easy for them to do just a little research and prove your article to have flaws.

Cichlid Forum's Profile suggests a 4' tank for an Adult pair - http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=132

Bad Man's site suggests 25 or larger for a pair - http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile58.html

Ya definitely requires a bit more research. For example, as stated, they don't live in the amazon . They are found in central america. Also they are not, as a general rule, deep water dwellers with most being found in water 6"- 5 feet deep.

Ok guys. I coulve found an article, but I wrote this to STRESS the fact that they need 30gs and a heater. You have to understand, these ppl are not MFK'ers. They didnt even know what was swimming around in their dining room.
