i have a pair of convicts and about 2 weeks after spawning the male almost killed the female. she lost a fin and had cuts down here side. now she is fine and they are breeding again. why did this happen and will it happen again??

He wanted some love and she didn't. My oldest male earned the name King Henry for repeatedly killing his women. He's not a breeder anymore. Give her plenty of places to hide and if you can places the male can't get.

ok i will. thanks for the help

Mine did the same thing. They keep on breeding but they fight off and on all the time. Right after their first spawn the male bit half the females mouth off. They still fight but nothing to serious anymore. When I added some more hiding places that really helped.

I have to put up a divider between mine. Hiding places don't help because my female is the most persistent and aggressive fish I have ever seen. she is a total nightmare. They are totally happy and peaceful until the fry are more mobile and all over the tank, then mom goes ballistic and proceeds to beat dad into a tattered pulp.

Once the fry are big enough to get rid of I can reintroduce my male and everything is great until they have fry that become free swimmer and the cycle starts again.

Be careful with the on again, off again fighter girls. My female (who was a tad bit smaller then the male) killed him one night. Well, she actually ripped his belly open to the point the only humane thing to do was put him down.

Now she's the very lovely queen of her own tank...after killing off the fry. Loves to flirt with me and the bright red food bag though!
