convict family

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no idea mate, but were in the same boat.
my convicts could be brother and sister, i know ones female and ones male, they've paired off and staked there claim on an area of the tank, cleaned it, dug a huge hole (only area they dig to) and have a go at anything that goes near it.

It's good to bring in new ones from time to time eventually. If you keep breeding brothers and sisters you will have more deformed ones.

Agreed. One of them could be sterile. New fish needed.

Inbreeding is acceptable for a few generations, but there are different ways to do it and direct sibling is one of the worst. For line breeding, you take one of the parents and breed it to its offspring. Then, you breed the same parent to the offspring's offspring. This will go about six generations before you get more deformed fish than survivors. But two siblings of the same batch, and then two of their offspring bred will break down the genes really fast.

What size tank????????Convict cichlids start breeding at the age of 3 months, or 1/2 inch........COnvicts WILL breed within 2 weeks in 99% of all tank sizes....Only variable that will throw them off is over crowding.........Is you tank overcrowded, if so, sperate a male and female into a 10g and the let the magic happen...........
