I’ve got a 5” male convict in my 300 with other Centrals. For the most part, everyone gets along.

He has stopping eating and hides all the time. I caught him out in the open tonight and noticed he’s got a big red sore under his chin. Anyone seen anything like this before?

My guess would be a bad bacterial infection, maybe a bite etc that got infected. Lumps/ sores on cichlids can sometimes be lymphocystis, but hopefully it is just an infection which wouldn't be contagious. I would remove the convict to a hospital tank and keep an eye on him. If it is an open wound, I would treat with salt in the water, if it is an infection you could use a medicine like metro. Hard to tell which it is to me from the pic unfortunately.

Thanks GS.

I snuck up on him early this morning before everyone was awake, scooped him up, and placed him in my 30 gallon backup/quarantine tank.

I’ve got both salt and metro on hand. What dosages do you recommend?

You can safely go up to .3% or one tablespoon of salt per gallon with no problem, though I would start at one TBSP per 3 gallons and raise if over a few days.
I would try the salt first and see how it goes, don't use in combo with the metro. If there is no change at all in a week, I would change the water out and try another route.
Melafix/pimafix is another idea that may work and the good thing about this is that it would be effective if the root cause is bacterial or fungal. However if the fish won't eat anything, you may not have time to try two different "easy methods", and may want to go straight to harder medicine. If you do decide to use Metro, here's a helpful quote from Dr. Edward Noga which RD. RD. had posted a while back
r. Edward J Noga suggests:

1. Bath

a. Add 19mg/gallon and treat for 3 hours. Repeat every other day for 3 treatments.

2. Prolonged Immersion

a. Add 25mg/gallon and treat once daily for a total of 3 times.
b. Add 95mg/gallon and treat every other day for three days.

3. via feed

25 mg/Kg of body weight/day for 5 to 10 days, or 100 mg/kg of body weight for 3 days. Retreat once if required.

I would do the prolonged immersion dose in the hospital tank. Metro stays in the water for 8 hours from my understanding, so if you dose in the morning you could do water changes at night, and then re-dose the next day, to keep the water very clean and oxygenated during the treatment.

I would try the salt first for 5 days or so, if no improvement change the water out and switch to metro. Dose as recommended by your metro product directions, some of them like general cure have other things in them as well, and state a dose. If doing the prolonged immersion 25mg/gallon treat once daily for a total of 3 times. Monitor the sore and keep stress low, a towel on the front of the tank would help. Would try to feed him once he's settled in the quarantine tank as well.

Just a quick update.

After a week he appeared to be on the mend so I did a WC and re-dosed with salt. The open sore on his chin is healing and he’s coming out in the open more. Of course the two cute little females I keep in the tank to keep it cycled didn’t hurt either! He’s taken a shine to one of them.
